FRELSBURG
(Miss Pearl Westphal)
The remains of Geo. Stallmann were brought to Frelsburg from Garwood Saturday morning and he was laid to rest in the Lutheran Trinity Cemetery at 11 o’clock.
Mr. Stallmann was born at Frelsburg, June 6, 1856. In the year 1881, January 11, he married Miss Pauline Venghaus of this community. Their union was blessed with 8 children of whom seven were sons. One of these died in early infancy, and two other reached the age of two years. The deceased made his home in this community up to 1893 and was a member of our Lutheran Trinity church until he moved to the little town called Vox Populi. His wife fell victim to a lingering disease and was for many years of delicate health. In 1908 she was taken from the side of her sorrowing husband and found her last resting place on this cemetery, where her husband was laid to rest at her side to rise with her at the sound of the last trumpet.
He remained single for the remainder of his days. Gradually his own health began to wane, rendering him weak and dependent upon his children which he enjoyed in full measure. As has[sic] condition permitted him to be around the house and there being no indication of any serious illness, no one expected that his end could be so near. Without warning or premonition his end came last Thursday night about 9:30 o’clock, when he was on his bed. A stroke of some sort of paralysis caused him to pass away, suddenly, but without pain or agonies of death. He died at the age of 77 years, 4 months and six days.
There remain to mourn his death, his four surviving sons, August, Henry, Edward and Geo. All of them from Garwood, and his only daughter Mrs. Ben Beckmeyer of Dickinson, Texas. He is also survived by 10 grand children and one sister, Mrs. August Krause of Moulton, Texas.

Lil began her career in service with her children. She was president of the local parent-teacher association for two years of her 15-year membership. During these years she directed annual Christmas programs and spring festivals and was a Girl Scout leader. For many years Lil directed fund-raising projects and programs for various clubs in Columbus including the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Music Club, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul Perry Hastedt Post 6113, Columbus Volunteer Fire Department and Magnolia Homes Tour,Inc.

She directed the first five melodramas for the annual Magnolia Homes tour that was held for many years in May. She served as president for the Stafford Opera House Little Theater in 1979. She was instrumental in establishing the tradition of the Magnolia Belles during the annual home tour in the early 1960s.
Lil’s civic service included City Council 1973-76; director of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce; director for the Magnolia Homes Tours Inc.; member of the Columbus Community Hospital Trust Foundation in 1987; and tutor volunteer for the Columbus Elementary School’s reading program, Help One Student to Succeed.

From 1974-76, Lil served as fund drive chairman to build a new hospital in Columbus. During the construction of the hospital. she wrote weekly articles of progress for local papers and served at the hospital as an associate member of the Columbus Community Hospital Auxiliary.
