Columbus soldier killed in Iraq
A Columbus soldier was killed in action in Iraq early Monday morning.
U.S. Army Pvt. Christopher Kilpatrick, a 2004 graduate of Columbus High School, was killed in an ambush by Iraqi insurgents around 2:30 a.m. Iraq time Monday, June 20.
Kilpatrick was a member of the 603rd Transportation Company.
He was the son of Scott Kilpatrick and Tracy Hanak. The family was notified of Kilpatrick's death by U.S. Army personnel Monday morning local time.

Columbus soldier killed in Iraq

A Columbus soldier was killed in action in Iraq early Monday morning, June 20.
U.S. Army Pvt. Christopher Kilpatrick, a 2004 graduate of Columbus High School, was killed in an ambush by Iraqi insurgents around 2:30 a.m. Iraq time Monday, June 20.
He was the son of Scott Kilpatrick and Tracy Hanak. Hanak could not be reached for comment.
Kilpatrick was a member of the 603rd Transportation Company stationed out of Fort Polk, La.
"He was lead gun on the first truck in a convoy," his father Scott Kilpatrick said. "The convoy was ambushed. A bomb hit his truck and flattened the tires."
U.S. soldiers engaged in a minute-long firefight with about six insurgents before the attackers fled.
"That's when they found out Christopher had been hit," Scott Kilpatrick said. "They took him by helicopter to a hospital, but he was dead when they got there."
Christopher Kilpatrick was pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m. Monday, Iraq time, about 30 minutes after the ambush.
The family was notified of Kilpatrick's death by U.S. Army personnel Monday morning local time.
The Department of Defense has yet to release any of the details of the incident. Those releases can sometimes take 48 hours or more to be made public, according to a Defense Department spokesman reached by phone Monday.
Christopher Kilpatrick is the second Colorado County soldier killed in combat in Iraq.
U.S. Army Spc. Clint Gertson of Eagle Lake was killed in combat by a sniper near Mosul, Iraq, Saturday, Feb. 19.
No details regarding a memorial service had been finalized as of press time.

Soldier to be laid to rest Tuesday
U.S. Army PFC Christopher Kilpatrick, who was killed in action in Iraq Monday June 20, will be laid to rest Tuesday, June 28.
Kilpatrick's body is expected to arrive in Houston Sunday afternoon, and a motorcade will escort him back to Columbus.
The motorcade is expected to arrive in Columbus around 5 p.m. Sunday.
The procession will exit IH-10 at Hwy. 71 and turn north down Milam Street, west on U.S. 90, then down Cardinal Lane past Columbus High School. It will end at Henneke Funeral Home on Montezuma Street.
Columbus Volunteer Fire Department will sound its alarm when the motorcade reaches Colorado County, and local church bells will ring as the procession moves through Columbus.
The procession will also be broadcast live on KULM 98.3 FM and KNRG 92.3 FM.
Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Monday, June 27 at First Baptist Church and beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Kilpatrick's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Knights of Columubs Hall, with a reception to follow at First Baptist Church on Milam Street.
H-E-B Pantry Foods will supply food for the reception.

Christopher Reed Kilpatrick
Christopher Reed Kilpatrick, 18, gave his life for his country and went to be with his Lord on Monday, June 20, 2005. He was born in Houston, Texas on June 28, 1986 to Tracy Soape Kilpatrick and Scott Reed Kilpatrick.
He attended elementary, junior high and high school in Columbus, Texas, graduating on May 28, 2004. He decided during his senior year to join the United States Army, with the intent to attend college after serving his country, and so he signed up for the Army in the spring of 2004. He began basic training Aug. 18, 2004, at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., completing the program on Oct, 28, 2004. He attended Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood and then arrived at Fort Polk, La., on Dec. 4 and was assigned to the 603rd Transportation Company, 142nd Corps Support Battalion as an 88M10 Vehicle Operator. On Feb. 20, 2005, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
While serving on active duty, Christopher received the following awards: National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal.
Christopher was a member of First Baptist Church, Columbus, Texas and also attended the Frelsburg Baptist Church. Among other things, Christopher played on the Columbus Cardinal basketball team throughout high school and he also played tennis. He was also a member of the CHS FFA chapter and a member of the FCA. Christopher was a Cub Scout, a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout. He qualified for the academic all-district team and was voted most outspoken in 2004 by his classmates.
Christopher was many things to many people. He was a son, brother, nephew, cousin, grandson, friend, step-brother, stepson and finally, a soldier. He was loving, caring, brave, adventurous, fun, funny, athletic and warm-hearted. People enjoyed being around him. Even though his life was cut short, he experienced much, and lived life to the fullest. He had a wonderfully positive attitude and did his best to share it with everyone with whom he came in contact.
Christopher is survived by his father Scott Kilpatrick and wife Melissa, his mother Tracy Hanak and husband Zachary, his sisters Jaclyn and Morgan Kilpatrick, step-sisters Elizabeth and Rebecca Boulware, his paternal grandparents Bill and June Kilpatrick, all of Columbus, his maternal grandparents Jack Soape of Opelousas, La., and Scarlette Soape of Flatonia, Texas, his maternal great grandmother, Betty Baker of Krotz Spring, La., and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Christopher's body will return to Columbus with a motorcade through town on the evening of Sunday, June 26, 2005. Visitation will be held from 1-7 p.m. Monday, June 27 at the First Baptist Church sanctuary, Columbus, Texas. A prayer vigil will be conducted that night at 7 in the sanctuary. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Columbus, Texas, with visitation from 8 a.m. until the service begins at 10 a.m. Burial will follow immediately afterward at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery, Columbus, Texas, with full military honors by the 142nd Corps Support Battalion of Fort Polk, La. The funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Sammy Carr of First Baptist Church, Columbus, Texas, and by Pastor Clayton Wallin of Frelsburg Baptist Church, Frelsburg, Texas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home, Columbus, Texas, with the participation of the United States Army. Serving as honorary pall bearers will be Christopher's cousins Shawn, Shannon, Jason and Josh Dabney, Aaron, Michael and Zachary Peters, and Matthew Hatfield, and his friends Bradley Berger, Brent Gorman, Ryan Henneke, Cody Kovar, Cody May, Robert Medina, Blake Rosenbaum and Eric Wood.

Community mourns fallen hero
U.S. Army PFC Christopher Kilpatrick was supposed to have turned 19 on Tuesday, June 28. Instead, he was laid to rest as a war hero.
Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Columbus to pay their final respects to the young soldier who was killed in an ambush in Iraq, June 20.
Kilpatrick, the son of Scott Kilpatrick and Tracy Hanak of Columbus, was buried with full military honors by the 142nd Corps Support Battalion of Fort Polk, La., at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery.
The mourning began, though, early last week as word of Kilpatrick's death spread throughout the community.
Yellow ribbons were tied to trees, lamp posts and sign posts all over Columbus.
A full motorcade that included local police, fire personnel and veterans escorted Kilpatrick's body through town Sunday, June 26.
Mourners lined the streets - many saluting, holding flags or holding their hands over their hearts - as the motorcade passed.
First Baptist Church was full of mourners all day Monday for visitation.
Kilpatrick, a 2004 Columbus High School graduate, joined the U.S. Army right out of high school.
