COMMENTS: Caroline Suggs came to Colorado County with her brother, John A. Suggs, his wife and child and sister, Elizabeth Suggs. They left Tampa, FL, on a flat bottomed steam powered stern wheeled paddle boat and disembarked at Galveston, TX, in late 1840 or early 1841. The Suggs family had undergone incredible hardships during the Second Seminole War. They had been in the bullseye of the war and several family members had died in Indian attacks. After six years of war, it was probably time to leave for a safer place to live and raise a family. After a few years in their newly found peace, Caroline met George Washington Guinn. They married and had three children. Then, George died, followed by Caroline a few years later. Their graves are probably in a family cemetery on the old Suggs plantation that was last visited and described by the Suggs family in the 1950s.
